The difference between a normal needle and surgical
The very first needle was created from a fish bone and thin bones of animals. At the blunt end, a hole was made and the instrument was ready for use. There were also needles that were created from bushes, but this invention was short-lived. Years later, metal objects made of iron began to appear, and steel appeared in Europe in the 14th century. The masters did not know how to do the eye, so they simply bent the end. Later, the instrument acquired the kind that we know.
The needle is an invention that has always been at hand in every home: the poor and the kings. However, in this case we will talk about a surgical needle that plays an important role in medicine.
Medical needles have a special eyelet in which a thin thread of sterile material is threaded. Practically, the material that securely connects the needle to the thread, excludes injuries. The diameter of the thread is suitable for the size of the needle.
Types of medical instrument
Conditionally the needle can be divided into several forms: cutting and stitching, tapercut, blunt form, and lanceolate. Each species has its own characteristics:
Cutting. Form of three faces. The edges can be directed up or down, respectively, the needle - the reverse and the straight. These needles sew up dense skin tissues.
Stitching. The shape of the cylinder is cross-sectional, and also conical at the end of the needle. Applied mainly for internal organs: impose anastomoses, connect uniform tissues.
Taperatk. This is a combination of two functions of a needle of the first and second kind. Used for stitching hard fabrics.
Bluntheaded. These needles are round in shape with a blunt end. Suitable for stitching the liver or cervix.
Lancetoid. It has the shape of a trapezoid with two pointed ends. The needle penetrates better into the thin tissue, while not damaging the organs. Often applicable in microsurgery or ophthalmology.
The most common are the first 3 types of needles. By the level of curvature, the tool is divided into straight and curved. The degree is calculated in the circumference of 1 to 8. Often use 1 to 2 and 3 to 8.
Needle selection for surgery
A medical needle for surgery is the tool without which full-fledged surgical treatment is not complete. Needles are used for suturing wounds, for feeding medicinal solutions, for blood tests in laboratory studies. All this determines the further treatment of the patient. To stitch the wound well, there are a number of nuances that need to be considered when choosing a surgical needle:
Acuity. This is the basis of every medical needle. The tool should be well grounded to easily penetrate into the fabric with minimal injuries.
Sterility and corrosion protection. An important point for treatment, because otherwise there is a risk of infecting the wound.
Elastic stiffness. These 2 criteria ensure the integrity of the needle and the convenient angle of bending. For such a task, stainless steel is chosen. Needles are amenable to thermal impact.
Tensile strength. The needle should bend at an angle of 45 degrees. Important is the professionalism of the surgeon: he must feel the edge so as not to bend the needle when not needed.
Strong fasteners. During the operation, the thread must be firmly attached to the needle. There is a factory fixation, which manufacturers provide. Suture material must be firm and intact throughout the operation.
When choosing a surgical needle, pay attention to the type of matter. The parameters of the suture are important.
