Cortical bones make up more than eighty percent of human bone mass. They are distinguished by a denser structure, which provides an optimal level of protection for the internal cavities of the body. To perform orthopedic, traumatological and surgical operations on such bone tissue, special cortical medical screws are used.
Cortical screws are medical connecting elements with a blunt pointed end and a thin, fine thread along the entire length. The thread diameter has a ratio of one to one and a half to the diameter of the screw body. They can be used to secure damage to cortical bones alone or in combination with additional elements (plates).
During the operation, to fix the damaged areas, the doctor drills a canal in the bone, cuts a thread with a tap and inserts a screw. In the last few years, self-tapping type cortical screws have become available on the market. Self-tapping models are inserted into the drilled channel without pre-applied threads. The end of such a screw has the shape of a triangular trocar and a cutting notch - the screw itself performs the function of a tap. The advantage of self-tapping screws is significant time savings by reducing the number of necessary technological operations.
The most popular on the Ukrainian market are cortical-type trauma screws with a diameter of 2.7 to 4.5 millimeters. The length of the screw can be up to eight millimeters to six centimeters. The manufacturing material is most often medical stainless steel - it is durable and rigid, has a more affordable price than titanium products, and is rejected by the body in fewer cases.
