Oxygen therapy or oxygen therapy is the use of oxygen for preventive or therapeutic purposes. It allows you to quickly compensate for the lack of oxygen in tissues and cells, saturate the body with energy, relieve tension, fatigue and hypoxia. Oxygen therapy equipment is widely used at home, in hospitals, clinics, health care institutions, and emergency medical centers.

Main indications for the use of oxygen therapy

Oxygen therapy is prescribed to patients who experience shortness of breath, fatigue, drowsiness, cough, headaches and migraines, decreased performance, sleep disturbances and other symptoms.

The main diseases in which oxygen has its therapeutic effect are:

  • stroke;
  • psoriasis and cystic fibrosis;
  • arthrosis and arthritis;
  • heart failure;
  • diabetes mellitus type 1;
  • bronchial asthma and pulmonary hypertension;
  • chronic respiratory failure;
  • carbon monoxide poisoning;
  • gas and air emboli.

Oxygen therapy equipment - classification

The most popular types of equipment for oxygen therapy are:

  • Oxygen pads with mask or nasal cannula:a simple and effective mechanical means of delivering oxygen to the patient. It is a rectangular tank made of waterproof fabric material with a volume of 30, 42 or 50 liters. The pillow is pre-filled with oxygen in a hospital or pharmacy and stored closed;
  • Oxygen cylinders with nasal cannula or mask: A cylindrical sealed container for storing a breathing oxygen mixture under pressure. It can have a volume of 2, 3, 4 or 10 liters. The standard supply of oxygen cylinders includes a transport case or a special trolley for 10 liter cylinders, a pressure gauge, a gas flow regulator, a humidifier, a flow meter and a fuse. Most often, aluminum is used as the material for making the cylinder - it is durable and light, and can withstand high pressure;
  • Oxygen concentrators: compact technical devices that are designed to separate pure oxygen from the surrounding air, concentrate it and supply it to the patient. Unlike oxygen bags and cylinders, which are most often used periodically, the concentrator is capable of providing a continuous supply of the breathing mixture. The main technical parameter of the concentrator is performance - at home, in hospitals and clinics, models designed to supply 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, or 20 liters of oxygen per minute are most often used. In addition, hubs can be powered from the mains or have built-in lithium-ion batteries;
  • Oxygen humidifiers:devices that are used to humidify an oxygen gas mixture. They are connected to an external oxygen source and provide a humidity level of at least 85%;
  • Pulse oximeters: devices designed to non-invasively measure the level of oxygen in a patient's capillary blood. Due to their compact size, pulse oximeters can be used in any environment; they do not require special knowledge or skills;
  • Oxygen outlets with humidifiers and flow meters:special gas valves that provide easy and convenient access to a centralized breathing gas supply system.
