Visual acuity is a measure of the distance at which two points are perceived by the patient's eye as separate. Medical assessment of visual acuity is called visometry. For a high-quality and quick determination of acuteness and quality in medicine, several special tables with black symbols on a white contrasting background are used.

Classification of tables for viziometry

Examination of patients to determine visual acuity is a mandatory procedure for children during admission to kindergarten or school. In adults, the examination can be carried out during preventive medical examinations or during employment.

The absolute indications for carrying out a visual examination are:

  • complaints about decreased quality of vision;
  • diagnosis of diseases, the course of which can lead to a decrease in visual functions;
  • checking the state of visual functions before surgery;
  • evaluation of the effectiveness of the completed course of treatment (surgical or medicinal).

The main types of devices and tables for testing the quality of vision are:

  1. apparatus for diagnosing visual acuity model G005;
  2. tables for diagnosing visual acuity model KP;
  3. Orlova tables for diagnosing visual acuity, TO model;
  4. Rabkin polychromatic tables model TR;
  5. Golovin-Sivtsev tables model TS.

Apparatus for diagnosing visual acuity model G005

Model G005 is used for selecting corrective glasses using the subjective test method. The diagnostic device is widely used in ophthalmological clinics, clinics, and health care institutions in Ukraine. Structurally, model G005 is a vertical box made of organic glass and aluminum profile measuring 92*30*11 centimeters with an opening lid. Inside the box there are two sixty-watt fluorescent lamps. Model G005 is connected to a household electrical network with an operating voltage of 220 Volts. The weight of the apparatus for diagnosing visual acuity is five kilograms.

On the front opening lid there is a translucent screen measuring 90*30 centimeters. On a white screen, W-shaped optotypes are applied in rows with black paint at different angles. Opposite each row, visual acuity indicators are marked with symbols - from 0.1 to 5.3. During the examination, the patient should be located at a distance of five meters from the screen.

Tables for diagnosing visual acuity model KP

Tables for diagnosing visual acuity of the KP model are supplied to the market in a set of six pieces. The set includes tables:
  1. Golovina-Sivtseva is a table in which sets of seven letters of the Cyrillic alphabet of different sizes are printed on a white background. The table contains twelve rows, the size of the letters in which decreases from top to bottom;
  2. Landolt - table of round optotypes with breaks. In their shape, optotypes resemble the letter C, printed in twelve rows - the size of the optotypes decreases from top to bottom. The gap can have four (north, south, west and east) or eight options (north, south, west, east and four oblique). The Landolt table is used as an international medical standard, since it can be used by patients with any level of literacy;
  3. With W-shaped optotypes. A table with W-shaped optotypes allows the ophthalmologist to determine the level of visual acuity in patients. For a poster printed in A2 format, one hundred percent vision is considered to be the indicator at which he distinguishes the symbol in the tenth line at a distance of seven meters;
  4. for diagnosing astigmatism - used to identify a sharp decrease in the quality of vision, doubling of objects or their severe curvature;
  5. Orlova for children - a table containing seven rows of pictograms. Opposite each row in the table is printed the distance in meters from which a child with a normal level of vision should clearly distinguish the pictograms;
  6. for diagnosing visual acuity at a distance of thirty centimeters, a normal level of vision is considered to be acuity equal to one (the patient freely reads the first text of the table from a distance of thirty centimeters from the eyes).

Orlova tables for diagnosing visual acuity model TO

Orlova tables are tables used to determine visual acuity in children of preschool age and primary school age. They differ in that they depict pictograms familiar to children, arranged in seven rows - five in the top row and eight in the bottom row. Opposite each row is the distance from which the child with a normal level of visual acuity should be able to see pictograms.

During the research process, the child is asked to name one pictogram in the very top row, and then everything below until he can no longer distinguish. The series in which he can correctly name the majority of signs will indicate the level of his visual acuity. Orlova's tables are simple and effective; they are used in schools, kindergartens, ophthalmology offices and clinics.

Polychromatic tables of Rabkin model TR

Rabkin's polychromatic tables are a collection of tables in magazine form, which is used to study the quality of a patient's color vision using symbols of numbers and geometric shapes. Figures and numbers consist of circular elements of different colors, but of the same color intensity.

Rabkin tables are used to diagnose the quality of a patient’s color vision, various degrees and types of color pathologies. The tables include forty-eight pictures - main images (from the first to the twenty-seventh) and control images. At the end of the magazine there is a table with a breakdown of the test results. Rabkin tables are widely used to test color vision among drivers of trucks and public vehicles.

Table Golovin-Sivtsev model TS

The Golovin-Sivtsev table is the most common tool used to diagnose the quality of vision in adult patients. It consists of two parts - in the first part seven letter optotypes are printed in twelve lines with repetitions, and in the second part there are rings with Landolt spaces in twelve rows. Both parts are printed in the same style with the same character size. During the examination, the patient sits five meters from the table - the lower in the row he sees the signs, the better the quality of vision.
